Boomslang is the new recording by Rich Halley, featuring a quartet with Los Angeles cornetist Dan Clucas, Canadian bassist Clyde Reed and long time drummer Carson Halley. Recorded in Portland in December 2019, Boomslang features a mix of Halley compositions and spontaneous improvisations that showcase the depth and inventiveness of the group’s playing.
Rich Halley has released 24 recordings as a leader. Boomslang follows Halley’s critically acclaimed recordings The Shape of Things and Terra Incognita (with Matthew Shipp), The Literature, The Outlier, Creating Structure and Crossing the Passes.
“Heartland American jazz of the very highest order.” Brian Morton, Point of Departure
“Oregon-based saxophonist Rich Halley has been turning out smart, brawny music for a couple of decades.” James Hale, DownBeat
“Uncluttered, bold and powerful.” Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz
Notes:
Boomslang! I like the onomatopoeic connotations of the word, but the first thing I think of is the snake, climbing in an East African tree. I’ve known about the Boomslang since I was ten years old, searching the library for books like Raymond Ditmars’ “Snakes of the World.”
The Boomslang was notable because in 1957, Karl Schmidt, herpetologist from Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, died after being bitten by a juvenile specimen he was handling. That made an impression on me. Now, years later, the Boomslang is a snake in the imagination that continues to manifest in new and unforeseen forms.

After a precision liftoff in Tabasco and setting a course to travel the space ways from planet to planet, the album peels away through a wormhole just past Saturn in the eponymous track Mayan Space Station to journey through time and space in Canyons of Light. eric F
A trio of equals, all three supreme melodists with endless, seamless vocabulary.
There is quiet tonal beauty here, but when he really lets loose, Kirk Knuffke is the most arresting, ecstatic cornet player on the planet. This is a majestic record. Steven Miller
A sonic exploration of the life and thoughts of trees, this is brave and exploratory contemporary classical music and avant-jazz. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 6, 2022
This record has such a magical flow to it, it seems to capture so directly the ups and downs of life, the joy of music and dance, and it's just so damn catchy and fun to listen to as well. Giles
